5 mistakes to avoid on your Pre-Release landing page

erreurs landing page Pre-Release

A Pre-Release landing page is the choke point of a release campaign. Five recurring mistakes kill conversion: poor mobile UX, weak CTA, missing tracking, no social proof, slow loading. Here’s the diagnosis and the fix for each, with the gain to expect.

Why a Pre-Release landing page is critical

The Pre-Release is the single most undervalued mechanic of an indie release. A fan who signs up for your Pre-Release sees the track appear in their Spotify or Apple Music library on release day, often with a notification. It’s the closest thing to a guaranteed first-week stream.

The funnel is short: ad/post → landing page → Pre-Release click → DSP confirmation. Each step bleeds users. The 5 mistakes below typically cost 30 to 60% of conversion. Each one is fixable in less than 30 minutes.

Mistake 1: a mobile-broken page

85% of clicks come from mobile. A landing page designed on desktop, with hero art that overflows, buttons that need pinch-zoom, and a wall of text above the fold, kills the campaign before it starts.

Symptoms: high bounce rate (above 70%), session duration under 5 seconds, ad CTR that drops after 48 hours.

Fix: open your page on a phone, in portrait. The cover art must be visible without scrolling. The Pre-Release button must be tappable with a thumb in one hand. Font size minimum 16px. No horizontal scroll. Test on iPhone SE width (375px), if it works there, it works everywhere.

Mistake 2: a weak or multiple CTA

« Listen, » « Stream now, » « Check it out, » « Pre-Release, » « Follow, » all on the same page. The fan doesn’t know what to click. Choice paralysis.

Fix: « One single, clear call-to-action ». One CTA above the fold: Pre-Release. Period. Everything else (follow, share, listen to old tracks) goes below the fold, lower in visual hierarchy.

If you absolutely need two actions (e.g., Pre-Release + follow on Instagram), the second one in secondary visual treatment (outline button, gray text), never in the same visual weight as the primary CTA.

Mistake 3: no tracking installed

A landing page without Meta Pixel and without UTMs is a black box. You don’t know which ad campaign converted. You don’t know how to retarget the visitors who didn’t sign up for the Pre-Release. You can’t optimize.

Fix: four bricks, non-negotiable:

  1. Meta Pixel: dropped on every page, with custom event « PreSaveClick » on the CTA
  2. Google Ads tag: same logic, for YouTube remarketing
  3. UTM parameters on every inbound link (Instagram bio, Meta ad, email): ?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=bio&utm_campaign=preSave_singleX
  4. Server-side conversion API (Meta CAPI): for iOS 14+ tracking accuracy

Setup time: 1 to 2 hours, once. Without these, every euro of ad spend is half-blind.

Mistake 4: no social proof

An empty page asking the fan to commit to a future stream relies entirely on the artist’s existing brand. Below 10,000 monthly listeners, that’s rarely enough.

Fix: add one or two proof elements visible on the page:

  • Streams counter on past releases (« 12,500 monthly listeners on Spotify »)
  • One short press or peer quote (verified)
  • Live count of Pre-Release sign-ups (« 327 fans have already signed up »)
  • Past playlist placements logos (Spotify editorial, Apple Music Up Next, etc., only if verified)

Even one of these elements typically lifts conversion by 10 to 20%. Don’t fake any of it, the fans who fact-check are the ones most likely to convert and become advocates.

Mistake 5: a slow page

Every 100 ms of additional load time costs roughly 1% of conversion (e-commerce industry benchmark, transferable to music landing pages). A page that takes 4 seconds to load on 4G has already lost 25 to 30% of clicks.

Fix:

  • Cover art compressed to under 200 KB (use a modern format: WebP, AVIF)
  • Background video disabled on mobile (or replaced by static image)
  • No external script not strictly necessary (chat widgets, popups, third-party fonts loaded synchronously)
  • Test load time on PageSpeed Insights: target ≥ 90 mobile

Hosted platforms like band.stream, Linkfire, Feature.fm already handle this. If you self-host your landing page on WordPress + Elementor, plan a real performance audit.

Quick audit checklist

Open your current Pre-Release page and answer these five questions:

  1. On a phone, do you see the cover art and the CTA without scrolling? Yes / No
  2. Is there a single primary CTA above the fold? Yes / No
  3. Meta Pixel, UTM parameters, CAPI installed? Yes / No
  4. At least one social proof element visible? Yes / No
  5. Page loads in under 2 seconds on 4G? Yes / No

Three « no » or more = your conversion rate is below half of what it could be. The fixes typically take a Saturday afternoon.

Key takeaways

  • The Pre-Release page is the conversion choke point of a release
  • Five common mistakes cost 30 to 60% of conversions
  • Mobile design, single CTA, full tracking, social proof, fast load
  • Each one is fixable in under 30 minutes

Actions to take this week

  1. Run the 5-question audit on your current Pre-Release page
  2. Fix the failed items, starting with mobile and tracking
  3. Run a 5-day Meta ad test before/after fix to measure conversion rate uplift
  4. Document what worked for your next release
